About Greenyards Cattle

The Greenyards herd was established in 2003 by Phil and Alison Allman when the family farm was based in Perthshire, Scotland. Although breeding beef cattle had always been an aspect of the business, Phil and Alison decided to take the plunge and specialise in a particular herd. At the time, the choice was an easy one. Herefords were once bred on the family farm in the 60s and 70s and Phil especially remembered their excellent temperament and ease of management.

There was early success for the Greenyards herd. In 2006 Greenyards 1 Archie, the spiritual father of the herd won Best of Breed in all big four British agricultural shows in – The Royal Show, The Great Yorkshire Show, The Royal Highland Show and The Royal Welsh Show and was named Bull of the Year shortly after.

In 2007 the Allmans relocated to their current home outside the village of Marden in the Herefordshire countryside which has allowed them to breed their Herefords in the beautiful home county of the breed.

Notable other successes include the 2006 Female of the Year Broatch 1 June; 2008 Poll Female of the Year Greenyards 1 Mary-Irene; 2008 Reserve Female of the Year Greenyards 1 Duchess 2008; and 2010 Female of The Year Greenyards 1 Lotty. As a result, the Greenyards Hereford herd have become well-known and respected in the farming industry appearing on television, in the press and even in porcelain form!

In 2006, the first Charolais was bought. Although the Herefords remain a particular focus of Phil and Alison, the move to include Charolais was not only towards producing a more commercial animal, but also to complement the existing herd. The good nature and efficiency of the Greenyards Herefords is now well supported by the feed conversion and growth rate of the Greenyards Charolais.

Currently the Greenyards herd numbers around 35 Hereford cattle and 15 Charolais on 62 acres of grassland. Phil and Alison make regular appearances at local and national agricultural shows and their latest successes appear in the successes page of this website.
